All About Me

Passionate Explorer

Hi, my name is Jim. I am a freelance walking guide, qualified Hill and Moorland Leader and accredited Duke of Edinburgh Award Assessor, Supervisor and Trainer. My experience in wild country walking and backpacking stems back over 40 years, since I was a small child.  This includes hill, moorland and mountain walking, wild camping, night navigation and group leading.
I have been a active trainer and group leader in the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme for over 10 years, working on all three awards. I am an accredited DofE Assessor/Supervisor.
In addition to DofE, I also offer guided walking services to the public and to groups and clubs.
I am based on the outskirts of the New Forest, and although I predominantly cover the Wessex region (Avon, Berkshire, Dorset, Hampshire, Somerset and Wiltshire), I also have extensive knowledge and experience of the moorland and coastal areas of the South West.
Away from the South Coast my knowledge and experience covers the Cotswolds, Isle of Wight, the Lake District and the South Downs. I have also spent some time walking or leading in various parts of Wales including Bannau Brycheiniog (the Brecon Beacons), Elan Valley and Eryri (Snowdonia).
I have a keen interest in historical sites, wildlife and conservation, and am often found searching for hidden points of interest, and the incredible variety of wildlife that can be found throughout the changing seasons.

LIKE BEST

My wife and I went on the New Explorer course from Godshill cricket ground on Feb 4th, as a trial run before the season starts tomorrow. It's a great way to spend some time outdoors. Jim has an expert knowledge of hiking and navigation and, as you would expect from such an experienced D of E instructor, was an excellent teacher. He also had a vast knowledge of the history of the area and it was very interesting to see 4000 year old burial mounds (tumuli) and to find out how important the area was during WWII. We would thoroughly recommend taking one of Jim's courses.
